During its history spanning over a century, it has evolved at the hands of the different members of the family who have lived there. The most recent owners have renovated it and transformed it into a boutique hotel, with the intention of immersing guests in an atmosphere reminiscent of the moods and pursuits of the people who have lived within its walls.

Centrally located in the heart of Colombo and surrounded by art galleries, chic boutiques, coffee shops, restaurants, shopping and national monuments, Maniumpathy is the ideal base from which to explore the city.

Adjoining the estate is Dambatenne, possibly the most famous estate in all of Sri Lanka. Dambatenne is one of the only estates in the world that Sir Thomas Lipton planted himself. The term “Ceylon Tea” was coined here, and Lipton’s Tea was founded and sold its first pound of tea from the precincts of the factory which still stands today.  Guests of Thotalagala will be granted exclusive access to the factory and the bungalow which was Sir Thomas Lipton’s residence from 1890 to 1910.

Its location offers guests the opportunity to visit Sri Lanka’s largest and oldest national park, Yala which boasts the highest leopard population density in the world.
