In a series of journeys lasting from 48 hours to 15 days, the iconic Rovos Rail and the Blue Train link some of the continent’s greatest destinations and each journey has its own off-train excursions ranging from safari to cultural and historical outings.

Rovos Rail

Rovos Rail recaptures the romantic atmosphere of a bygone era and the mystery of Africa in a relaxed, elegant fashion. The exquisite dining cars are the signature of these trains, known to serve fine cuisine in ultimate Victorian luxury while the picturesque scenery of Southern Africa unfolds beyond the windows. Traditional furnishings and period décor ensure an atmosphere of elegance and grandeur in the lounge and observation cars.

Weather

South Africa has four distinct regions that experience various climates: Cape Town has a typically Mediterranean climate boasting mild winters and pleasant summers with January and February reaching 25°C and averaging eleven hours of sunshine a day. Johannesburg has a dry climate with unlimited sunshine and high average temperatures of 20ºC and cooler night climates of 5ºC. Durban is blessed with tropical weather and great year-round sunshine with temperatures reaching 32 °C in summer and between 16°C and 25°C from June to August. Port Elizabeth boasts a magnificent yearly moderate climate with dry summers and mild winters.

Rovos Rail was one of the (many!) highlights of our tailor-made South Africa itinerary. From the moment we arrived at the departure lounge and were greeted with a glass of champagne, we knew that this was going to be something special. Onboard it really is like stepping back in time - the carriages, lovingly restored, were extremely comfortable and we spent much of our time in the observation lounge or in one of the dining carriages with a drink in hand watching the world go by. The food was excellent and if you want to be sociable then a glass of something pre or post-dinner in the Lounge Car chatting to other guests is great fun. A highlight was visiting the diamond mines in Kimberley - a fascinating experience.

Direct flights are available from London to both Cape Town and Johannesburg with British Airways and South African Airways. There are also several regional options with flights via Dubai with Emirates.
