          Fuerteventura

Use the drop-down menu below to explore Fuerteventura.

Located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa, the island of Fuerteventura is without doubt one of the most beautiful of the Canary Islands, with a relatively  diverse landscape, although Fuerteventura is also the least densely populated, retaining much of its true character.  Loosely translated as "Strong Winds" (or a corruption of the French term for "Great Adventure"), Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands (641 sq miles), after Tenerife, and the second-largest island in the archipelago with only 100km separating the ’Punta de la Entallada’ from Cape Juby in Morocco.

The barren and arid interior of the island shares much with its African neighbours of Morocco and the Western Sahara with sparse rainfall, rocky-desert landscapes (the temperature of these rocks can reach 67°C on a hot day) and simple flat-roofed white-washed villages.

Despite Tourism being a relatively recent phenomenon on the island, there’s a well-developed infrastructure with Golf Courses, a Zoo, a Water Park and numerous Marine Excursions. For those who prefer more active holidays, the Island offers great Surfing, Windsurfing and Kite Surfing as well as Big Game Fishing and Diving.

The main tourist resorts lie at opposite ends of the island. At the northern tip is Corralejo, loved by the British while deep down south lies Morro Jable, more staid than its northern counterpart Corralejo, and very popular with the German tourists. Its beach is the main attraction, with pale golden sand stretching for around 4 km from the older part of town.

Culture in Fuerteventura and in the Canary Islands in general is essentially Spanish culture with a little influence from Latin America.  The traditional folk music of the Canary Islands, Folklore, can be heard at the major festivals and at other special events. At the big Fiestas there are often groups representing their respective Islands - each has their own traditional costumes.

The climate on Fuerteventura is pleasant throughout the year. The island is also often referred to as the island of eternal Spring. The sea adjusts the temperature making the hot Sahara winds blow away from the island.   Precipitation is about 147 mm (6 in) per year, most of which falls in autumn and winter. October is the month with highest rainfall.

The island of Fuerteventura is served by one airport (also known as El Matorral Airport) which is located on the island’s east coast, approximately 3 miles from the capital city Puerto del Rosario.  The typical flight duration from the UK or Ireland to Fuerteventura is 3.5 - 4.5 hours and there are regular flights on numerous airlines from most areas of the UK.

Car Hire is a popular way of exploring this island and is widely available.
