The Enchanting Danube

Posted in Cruise by Dawn Letham on 27th Jul 2023

After a very smooth flight into Vienna, my bucket list river cruise trip on The Danube was about to begin. I was to join APT onboard one of their brand new four-star premium ships, Travelmarvel Polaris. After a 30-minute transfer, I could see the ship in all her glory and she looked amazing. Very sleek and she definitely stood out.

After swapping my suitcase for a glass of bubbly, I was taken to my French balcony suite. My first impression was 'wow'. The suites are incredibly modern, spacious and comfortable, and feature a seating area for two, a marble bathroom with a waterfall shower, a TV, a vanity area with an additional seat and a deluxe queen bed, which made for a perfect night's sleep. The main feature was the French balcony, which I discovered by pressing a button on the wall. The top window gradually disappeared, creating a French (Juliette) balcony - such a brilliant idea, and the perfect way to enjoy the ever-changing scenery as you slowly make your way along the river. Beautiful vineyards, bustling cities and fairytale castles. Little touches go a long way, so the cosy robe in the wardrobe and the chocolate left on my pillow each evening was very much appreciated.

The ship's interior had very modern decor, combined with cosy areas, and located at the centre was the lounge, a multifunctional area that changes throughout the day. Mornings were the perfect time to relax and take advantage of the beautiful scenery through the floor-to-ceiling windows, enjoyed with a variety of speciality drinks from the self-service area. In the afternoons you could enjoy a light lunch, while evenings turned into a night of music and entertainment, especially at McGearys Bar, the only Irish bar on the river - a place to enjoy pub grub and even a Guinness.

I enjoyed meals at the onboard Panorama Restaurant, with a fresh mixed buffet and omelette station for breakfast, while dinner offered a four-course menu, providing fine dining with a twist, which was inspired by the destinations we visited.

Excursions play a large part in river cruising and my days were filled with visiting some beautiful places. After just a leisurely 15-minute walk from the ship, we arrived in the beautiful Austrian town of Durnstein, which consisted of one long road, with small little streets leading off. We also visited Melk Abbey, which is still a working monastery, and which has the most beautiful grounds. At the very end of the tour, through the Abbey, you find yourself in the an awe-inspiring church. I really did not think this trip could get any better, but my visit to Cesky Kremlov stole my heart. I suppose the easiest way to describe this place is a miniature-sized Prague. Who would have thought that such a little town could have so much to offer?

Our last morning was spent on the sun deck, taking in the fantastic 360-degree views and discussing our amazing trip. I thoroughly enjoyed my river cruise. If you are looking for something tranquil and slow-paced with beautiful scenery, then a river cruise is for you.
