The Maldives: An Ocean Lover's Paradise

Posted in Travel Writing by Nicola Martin on 16th May 2023

Excited to experience the famous Maldivian overwater villas and wooden walkways over the ocean, I started my journey flying with Emirates from Manchester to Male, with a short stopover in Dubai, and was immediately met by a friendly Sun Siyam representative. The 45-minute seaplane ride over to the Dhaalu Atoll was such an exciting experience and I found my eyes fixed on the crystal-clear waters and the stunning islands beneath me.

My first stop was Sun Siyam Iru Veli. I was welcomed with a friendly smile, a cold towel and a refreshing glass of champagne… perfect! I was lucky enough to stay in a Sunset Ocean Suite and had my own private pool with a large sundeck. Décor is very light, giving a fresh & contemporary feel. Falling asleep listening to the lapping waves was so calming and definitely a highlight!

I dined at both the buffet and a la carte restaurants, with my favourite meal enjoyed at Grouper Grill, a seafood restaurant offering indoor/outdoor dining and an open-style kitchen. If you visit, you must try the seafood platter and indulge in scallops, calamari, tiger prawns and lobster - delicious! The Premium All Inclusive includes an extensive selection of beverages, a number of excursions and a credit to enjoy a spa treatment in the beautiful overwater spa during your stay. Entertainment is low-key and laidback, with a couple of bars to relax in of an evening and the occasional DJ set.

The second part of my stay was at Sun Siyam Iru Fushi in Medhafushi. I was greeted with a warm welcome by my dedicated butler, with the sound of traditional Maldivian drums in the background. As soon as I arrived, I was immediately struck by the lush greenery of the island – a contrast to its sister island. My stay here was in a Deluxe Beach Suite with my own private pool and huge daybed just steps from the stunning white sand beach. The style and décor of the rooms are the complete opposite of Iru Veli - dark woods, thatched roofs and my suite featured an outdoor bathroom giving an authentic Maldivian feel.

The resort has plenty to offer with 14 bars and restaurants, most of which are included in the extensive All-Inclusive plan, as well as a vibrant house reef, a watersports centre and an award-winning Balinese-style spa – you will never get bored! I had the pleasure of dining at Flavours, an overwater restaurant with an impressive private wine cellar – perfect for those celebrating a special occasion. All food was excellent, particularly the steak, all paired with beautiful wine from around the world. Iru Fushi has a bit more going on in the evening offering both live music and relaxed entertainment in a choice of venues across the island.

My first trip to the Maldives was an unforgettable experience and I loved both resorts for different reasons. Iru Veli for its slower pace and contemporary style and Iru Fushi for its range of activities and tropical island feel. For anyone considering a trip to the Maldives, you must visit. It’s a beautiful part of the world and I think everyone should experience the Maldives during their lifetime!
