Itinerary

  • Tour Details

White clapperboard churches set on a verdant village green with spires soaring towards a clear blue sky; quaint village stores and cafes lining the main street; picturesque houses with colourful gardens and a rocking chair on the porch; rolling hills with sparkling streams and green forests.

That’s New England in the summer; in the autumn it is even more beautiful as those green trees turn a kaleidoscope of reds, oranges, browns and yellows and the morning mist hangs over the fields and streams.

  • Days 1 & 2  Arrive Boston

Day 1 - Arrive in Boston and make your way to your downtown hotel. The rest of the day is free to explore this wonderful city.

Day 2 - Famous for everything from the Red Sox and Paul Revere to Cheers and clam “chowdah,” Boston is a popular destination for so many reasons. Part history lesson, part modern metropolis, the Hub offers attractions to suit every taste and interest. Hop on the Freedom Trail, a well-preserved pedestrian path that weaves in and out of historic neighbourhoods.

Between landmarks, you can shop the fabulous stores on Newbury Street, have a delicious authentic Italian meal in the North End or browse the antique shops and distinctive redbrick buildings of Beacon Hill. The more culturally inclined will not want to miss the city’s world class museums, theatre and music venues. Family friendly to the core, Boston also boasts a renowned aquarium, children’s museum and science museum, making it a great getaway for all.

Hotel for 2 nights in Boston.

  • Day 3  Boston - Mid Coast Maine (112 Miles)

Collect your rental car from the downtown office this morning and begin your adventure. First stop on anyone’s itinerary has to be historic Salem, famous for the witch trials in 1692; visit just before Halloween when the decorations are awesome and it gives the celebration a whole new darkness! Travel to the coast, stopping in Kittery for great factory outlet shopping. In historic Portland, enjoy the charming Old Port Exchange and, of course, lobster.

Hotels: Standard - Best Western Merry Manor; Superior - Hilton Garden Inn Freeport

  • Days 4 & 5  Portland Area - Bar Harbor (162 Miles)

Day 4 - Spectacular scenery awaits as you head for Bar Harbor situated on Mount Desert Island, known as the home of Acadia National Park with its lakes, forest, coastline and more than 300 species of birds.

In Bar Harbor you’ll find more than 100 restaurants; explore its sidewalk cafes and shops, or wander the waterfront and gaze at the 19th-century mansions that tower over the water, stately reminders of the days when this small town on Frenchman’s Bay was a grand summer resort for society families.

Day 5 - A free day in Bar Harbor for you to explore the Arcadia National Park or perhaps just relax in Bar Harbor. Hike or drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the eastern seaboard, and you’ll be the first in the country to welcome the sun; above you the early morning sky, below Maine’s rugged coastline.

    Hotel for 2 nights

  • Days 6 & 7  Maine - White Mountains (250 Miles)

Day 6 - Drive through gorgeous scenery - from forests to fields, all interspersed with sparkling lakes and rivers to the White Mountains. The White Mountains of New Hampshire are a wonderful place to escape, explore and create unforgettable memories. Experience towering peaks, stunning scenery unrivaled anywhere in the Northeast, spectacular waterfalls, tax-free shopping and limitless recreation.

Day 7 - Enjoy a day in White Mountains either relaxing at your hotel or perhaps you’ll venture out and enjoy the delightful scenery. Maybe drive to Mount Washington, do some shopping or ride the Conway Scenic Railroad.

    Hotel for 2 nights

  • Day 8  White Mountains–Green Mountains–North Vermont (130 Miles)

If you spent the night in Jackson or North Conway take the scenic Kancamagus Highway to Lincoln then visit pretty Woodstock before heading north to the mountain resort of Stowe. Stowe Mountain Resort is an internationally renowned four-season destination. Surrounded by majestic Mt. Mansfield – the highest peak in Vermont – and Spruce Peak, Stowe is filled with activities and adventures for every season and every guest: skiing, snowboarding, ZipTour and TreeTop Adventures, Stowe Rocks and much, much more.

Hotel for 2 nights: Standard – Commodores Inn; Superior – Golden Eagle Resort

  • Day 9  Northern Vermont

A day to relax or perhaps head out to Ben and Jerry’s ice cream factory before visiting Burlington on the shores of Lake Champlain and the Shelburne Museum. This is one of the country’s most diverse museums of paintings, folk art, quilts and textiles, and New England history and architecture. It is an unparalleled and unique experience of American history, art, and design. Designed to allow visitors the pleasure of discovery and exploration, the Museum includes thirty-nine distinct structures on forty-five acres, each filled with beautiful, fascinating, and whimsical objects.

  • Day 10  Stowe - Connecticut River Valley (174 Miles)

Travel to Rutland, once centre of the Vermont marble industry. Manchester Village is a lovely stop in your way to the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts. Visit the Francine Clarke Art Institute or the Hancock Shaker Village, a restored 19th century settlement. The original Shakers, who created the settlement, can be traced back to origins in Manchester England in the 1747. See what life was like on a guided tour.

Continue to Lenox, summer home of the Boston Symphony and Stockbridge, once home to Norman Rockwell, one of America’s greatest artists. The Norman Rockwell Museum houses many of his works.

Hotel: Standard - Holiday Inn Enfield, Springfield; Superior - Berkshire Fairfield Inn & Suites, Great Barrington

  • Days 11 & 12  Springfield-Newport, Rhode Island (127 Miles)

Day 11 - On your way to Newport why not make a stop at Sturbridge and visit Old Sturbridge Village, a living 19th century museum where you can “experience” rural New England life in the early 1800’s. Then perhaps head to Mystic, Connecticut and pop into the Mystic Seaport Museum. Mystic Seaport is the nation’s leading maritime museum. Founded in 1929 to gather and preserve the rapidly disappearing artifacts of America’s seafaring past, the Museum has grown to become a national center for research and education with the mission to “inspire an enduring connection to the American maritime experience.”

Continue to Newport on Aquidneck Island. Tracing its history to times as a colonial port, Newport is America’s first holiday resort and once a summer haunt of America’s first millionaires. White clapperboard houses contrast with the palatial mansions built by the city’s rich and famous holidaymakers from years gone by.

Day 12 - Spend the day on a spectacular beach; tour the Cliff Walk and Ten Mile Drive with its extravagant summer mansions. Visit the Breakers, the grandest of Newport’s summer “cottages” and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s social and financial pre-eminence during the late 19th century. Newport was home to the America’s Cup for over 50 years and is widely known as the sailing capital of the world. Newport’s restored waterfront features many shops and restaurants.

    Hotel for 2 nights

  • Days 13 & 14  Newport- Hyannis, Cape Cod (75 Miles)

Day 13 - It’s a leisurely drive to Cape Cod today, so make the most of it and see the sights. First stop should be Woods Hole, a pretty town with its oceanographic institute and aquarium. Perhaps take lunch on the waterfront dining before you continue to Osterville on Nantucket Sound. It can trace its history back to the 1600’s and got its name from the oyster fishing which was the main occupation in years gone by. It’s a short hop then to your hotel in nearby Hyannis.

Day 14 - Free Day in Cape Cod. Today is free for you to enjoy Hyannis and Cape Cod. In Hyannis you’ll find a historic downtown main street, beautiful harbour with waterfront dining to die for and the John F Kennedy museum. Ferries leave from here to Martha’s Vineyard, holiday home of the Kennedy dynasty, and to Nantucket. Or perhaps you’ll plan a whale watch cruise; visit historic Chatham or colourful, artistic Provincetown.

    Hotel for 2 nights

  • Day 15  Hyannis-Boston (75 Miles)

Boston is a relatively short drive from Cape Cod. En-route you’ll have time to visit picturesque Sandwich, the Cape’s oldest town and at Plymouth the Plimoth Plantation, a living museum of 1627 life. There’s time for lunch before you drive to the airport to return your car and take your onward flight.
