Mauritius Life at its Best

Posted in Travel Writing, Indian Ocean, Mauritius by Karen Platt on 8th Nov 2019

What a wonderful way to start our trip when we arrived at the Emirates check-in desk to find that we had been upgraded to Business Class! What a treat… I am now spoilt for life having experienced the flatbed seats and first-class service from Emirates.

I knew before I arrived in Mauritius that it’s a beautiful country but as our flight landed and I gazed out of the window, I thought I was landing in Jurassic Park! The vibrant green mountains mixed with the vivid blue ocean could have been taken straight from a film set. After our arrival, our transfer was ready and waiting for us in the most prime spot at the airport – all arranged by our ground agents Mautourco who look after all our guests visiting the island. Our driver, Steve, even looked like one of the T-Birds - equipped with his mirrored aviators! Driving from the airport to Heritage Le Telfair was eye opening - I recommend a window seat in the car as you pass several villages and the local creole people going by day to day life with dogs milling about!

Our first night at Heritage Le Telfair was a lovely start to the trip, and after a quick freshen up in our spacious beachfront Junior Suites we headed over to Gin’ja for dinner. The food was fabulous, from the amazing way they present the sushi to the sizzling giant shrimps, it was very entertaining to watch. The following morning, we took a buggy ride to see the Telfair Villas, crossing under the road and passing the golf course, where there is a range of very well-appointed villas to suit couples, families and keen golfers. The best was saved until last when we saw the newly opened Heritage C Beach Club. This fantastic new beach area exudes a chilled out chic barefoot vibe and is located away from the main hotel to ensure the monthly brunches and chic beach parties won’t disrupt guests wanting to keep a low profile!

During our visit we enjoyed a fascinating morning exploring the 7 Coloured Earth at Chamarel. The twisty mountain road enroute is an experience, with numerous photo opportunities along the way to take in the breath-taking views over Le Mourne Mountain and the natural elements of the islands surrounding coast. Steve, our driver/guide explained the fascinating history behind the Coloured Earth and we had an hour to explore and take photos - not forgetting Toto and Nini – the resident giant tortoises!

One of my favourite hotels on the island is Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Resort - possibly because I finally had a room with an outdoor shower (the first thing I checked in all the hotel rooms we saw were the bathrooms!). I stayed in a Beachfront Suite with Pool which is so incredible I had to pick my jaw up off the floor! If you are like me and love to take photos, then I recommend booking this room and watching the sunset from the sun loungers on the terrace - I can’t even begin to explain how spectacular the view is! After a quick (inside) shower we started our night at the La Caravelle Bar sampling a number of different cocktails and headed over to one of the best beaches on the island to enjoy their famous ‘Lobster & Fire night’. A sand-in-feet evening, I kicked off my wedges and collected my lobster from the BBQ and couldn’t fill my plate any higher with the different salads that were on offer! This happens every Friday night at the resort and I have never seen a fire show like it! A top tip – start videoing when one of the men enters the water - amazing!

In the north of the island they have the most famous church in Mauritius called the Red Church (original name I know!). Steve stopped on the side of the road so we could get out and explore. Yes, the church is impressive, but it is also worth taking a walk down to the water’s edge to have a look in the fisherman’s buckets! He had caught the most colourful fish I had ever seen and wanted us to take photos – I think he was showing off a little!

Throughout our visit we saw so many beautiful hotels and resorts along each coast of Mauritius, all offering different experiences to suit every kind of traveller. I would love to go back to Mauritius and explore more of the islands’ treasures, experience more of the creole culture and hopefully take a helicopter ride to see the underwater waterfall!
